Between the Secrets by S Ferguson
Sometimes the past won’t let you escape no matter how much your future wants you to.
Jake James lives in the shadows of his shame. The guilt for what he’s done, for what was done to him, has left him hollow and haunted.
Greg Bissen just wants Jake to let him in, having accepted who he is a long time ago, he is desperate to break through Jake's defenses.
When danger and an agonizing loss threatens to tear them apart, will Jake let the burdens of his past crush him?
Or can love really conquer all, even if it’s hiding in between the secrets?
This book contains strong adult content that may not be suitable for readers sensitive to hard to read subjects.
This is S. Ferguson’s first M/M book, but it’s the second in the series, so two things come to mind. First…I think it would have helped with the back history to have read book one, first—but it’s not a deal breaker—and as I did not read it, things eventually came together soon enough.
Secondly…I can’t help but think the author is writing from her gut—aka knowledge of truth—somewhere deep—because the pain and despair Jake and Greg go through... and share, is so palpable it literally will leave your throat aching with knots.
Jake James is about as broken as he can be—hiding behind sex and alcohol—but he’s also a survivor. He’s courageous and even though he doesn’t see it he has renewed strength and bravery that has gotten him to where he is.
Greg Bisson, however, does see these things in Jake, but as his best friend—gay best friend—who keeps his sexuality hidden—due to the environment they work in—he stays in the shadows, always on the ready to pull his friend back from the edge.
Their job is dangerous—someone is trying to kill them—and although they try to take out the scum on the streets—protect the ones that can’t protect themselves—they won’t hesitate to take a kill shot if you are the snake in their path.
As the tension mounts and people are dying with no leads, Greg can’t take the secrecy any longer of how he feels for his best friend. He also can’t continue to watch Jake take one more girl to his bed—smell her scent on his skin—drag his drunk ass to bed—or comfort him during his nightmares...while keeping his distance at the same time.
As the author unfolds Jake’s story, you will be gutted, heartbroken, angry, and ugly crying. You will experience all the emotions—and so much more—because the truth is hard, it’s ugly and it’s painful. The shame and guilt Jake has carried for years are literally eating him alive.
As the reader hears his story, so does Greg, and it’s time to be the man he is and it’s also time to claim the man he loves. Greg, being the strength, support, and shoulder for Jake to get his act cleaned up means more to Jake than he can find the words to tell Greg, but he can show him...and does he ever. OMFG!! So freakin' good!
They’ve been best friends almost since the first day they started working together. Being enforcers is a tough, dirty business requiring a hard, outer shell that takes no prisoners, but on the inside, Greg has so much love for Jake and being allowed to finally show him—tell him—is absolutely beautiful and rewarding to experience.
His patience and understanding are limitless and he is selfless with his body and mind allowing Jake to take the lead knowing he needs the control. As Jake becomes more comfortable, and he realizes the love they share—have possibly always shared—his world begins to heal.
Between the Secrets is confusing, at times, because as I said it’s the second book, and in the beginning, as characters are mentioned and events retold I felt lost with the back history. However, these things come together over the course of reading the story and most of them are irrelevant because the focus is Jake and Greg—on Jake’s healing and Greg’s reawakening of deciding enough is enough, and let’s take a stand. Then it became... let’s take a stand together. (insert high-five's and big happy faces)
While Between the Secrets is a thriller, crime and a mystery, there is so much passion and romance that leaps from the page between Jake and Greg. Their love story—though painful and hard to read—even brutal, becomes a lifeline between them where nothing or no one will come between them again.
Healing takes time, mending damaged parts of your psyche that have suffered years of abuse, but with Greg and Declan (Jake’s brother) a new side of Jake emerges from the pages and it was truly inspirational and amazing to read.
Between the Secrets does end on a cliffhanger but it wasn’t huge to the point of throwing a temper tantrum that these endings can sometimes provoke. It did, however, keep me wanting to continue reading more to see where this story leads—crossing fingers and toes—that Greg and Jake will continue to fill the pages with their intense chemistry and “I dare you to say anything to me” romance.
S. Ferguson had me hanging on every word as she took me on this journey and it was one hell of a ride.
There are still crimes to be solved and mysteries to be unfolded so I can’t wait to see what’s next. Highly recommended. 5 Stars!!
