I, Lochan of the famed Féyes clan, know all about fighting.

As a half-breed Elf, I have struggled against prejudice and feelings of inadequacy.

A recluse by nature, I have battled my aversion to touch and interaction with others.

To become an assassin of The Order, I have learnt to overcome the limitations of my mind and body.

But denying the power Ervyn Morryés holds over me might be the one fight I lose. The truth is—damn it all—the relentless Highlander brings me to my knees.

Note: This novelette is the second in the Order Series, and not a stand-alone installment. Reading THE MUTT is crucial for its full enjoyment.

I, Ervyn Morryés of the Black Mountain clan, know all about control.
As the only fair-haired Dark Elf in the Highlands, I had to learn to control my fists and my temper in the face of derision.
To become the best archer amongst my peers, I had to learn to control my breathing and my movements.
But the day the half-breed called Lochan Féyes arrived at the training camp, my discipline faltered. Because—sweet gods—when I am around that aloof, blue-eyed assassin, my need is uncontrollable.

The Mutt, a short story in The Order series, is absolutely fabulous and spell-binding. Not usually one for fantasy stories, I couldn't have been more enthralled in Kasia Bacon's world building and was swept away with her storytelling.

In this prelude leading up to the first book, The Elven Vice, we get the history of Lochan and Ervyn, and how they meet told from Ervyn's point of view.

Lochan is a half-breed elf—an assassin—training to serve in the Scouts, whereas Ervyn is an archer who will serve in the Queen's Guard.

Lochan is reserved, doesn't trust anyone, doesn't talk to anyone, but Ervyn has been watching him and he's very intrigued. So much so that he decides to take matters into his own hands to get Lochan to talk to him.

This is very short but it will hold your attention until the very end and you will be disappointed if you don't have the next story immediately. The anticipation, the thrill of the chase between these two, the banter, all of it is spot on, and I can't wait for more. Highly recommended.

4.5 Stars

The Highlander picks up after, The Mutt, with Lochan and Ervyn being together about four months. This installment is told from Lochan's point of view.

I love the dynamics at play between these two. Lochan, always composed, self-assured, easily submits to Ervyn in all things sexual and Ervyn picks up on that right away.

However, they are training for bigger things that will take them away for five years and Lochan knows that their time together is limited. He's already lost so many people and he's not willing to go through that again with Ervyn so he decides to cut his losses before he gets in too deep.

Not being an archer himself, he's not with Ervyn through the day or aware of what he's up too so keeping his distance comes easy. Unfortunately, he can't sleep without Ervyn by his side so he takes on night duty to stay busy.

When their orders come that will send them to the Queen's Guard, Lochan finds himself falling further into despair.

Unbeknownst to Lochan—Ervyn has a plan—but with Lochan giving him the cold shoulder it may backfire on them both.

Another amazing installment that will leave you aching for more of these two warriors that I have no doubt are soulmates. I can't wait to continue on this fabulous journey with them and experience the incredible world building Kasia Bacon has created.

The snark, the smiles, the sexy times, the swoon, it's all here in under sixty pages. Incredible!
