Oh, and if the kids ever ask, she moonlights as the Pink Power Ranger while they’re sleeping…
Who We Are by Nicola Haken is a beautiful story featuring Oliver—a hairdresser by day—drag queen by night—who has been raising his brother for the past ten years after losing their mother to cancer.
Oliver has been alone for so long that when he meets Sebastian at the bar one evening and he asks "Are you flirting with me?" and Sebastian answers back "Is it working?" Oliver is a little overwhelmed and stunned. It feels so good to be getting attention, and to be able to smile at another man so easily—and mean it—that he becomes smitten very quickly.
Sebastian and Oliver are amazing together and in no time they are introducing friends and family to each other. For years, Sebastian has struggled with being bi, but with Oliver he feels proud to be with him and is no longer insecure where he fits in.
When life decides to throw a curve ball in their plans, they work together as a united front—tackling every obstacle together—and with the support of friends and family... they persevere.
Who We Are is an emotional journey, but also uplifting, and even through the darker times there are many laugh-out-loud moments—and crazy antics—from a great cast of characters that add comfort and joy to the story.
Nicola Haken always writes, in my opinion, as if she is writing from real life experiences because what she writes is always so spot on so when I came to the plot twist... I debated going on because this is a personal trigger for me, but I continued and it was as I figured it would be. Heart and truth behind her words. Life is happening within these pages. Living, loving, and surviving is the story.
Of course I recommend anything and everything she writes because her words and stories—even though gut you—regenerate you and leave you feeling inspired and uplifted.
