#ReleaseDay #Review — INSIGHT (Community) Volume 1 by Santino Hassell + Giveaway

Growing up the outcast in an infamous family of psychics, Nate Black never learned how to control his empath abilities. Then after five years without contact, his estranged twin turns up dead in New York City. The claim of suicide doesn’t ring true, especially when a mysterious vision tells Nate it was murder. Now his long-hated gift is his only tool to investigate.

Hitching from his tiny Texas town, Nate is picked up by Trent, a gorgeous engineer who thrives on sarcasm and skepticism. The heat that sparks between them is instant and intense, and Nate ends up trusting Trent with his secrets—something he’s never done before. But once they arrive in the city, the secrets multiply when Nate discovers an underground supernatural community, more missing psychics, and frightening information about his own talent.

Nate is left questioning his connection with Trent. Are their feelings real, or are they being propelled by abilities Nate didn’t realize he had? His fear of his power grows, but Nate must overcome it to find his brother’s killer and trust himself with Trent’s heart.

Santino Hassell (Author)

Santino was raised by a conservative family, but he was anything but traditional. He grew up to be a smart-mouthed grunge kid, then a transient twentysomething, and eventually transformed into a guy who spends his days and nights writing romance with an edge.
Santino is a dedicated gamer, a former fanfic writer, an ASoIaF mega nerd, a Grindr enthusiast, but most of all he is a writer of LGBT fiction that is heavily influenced by the gritty, urban landscape of New York City, his belief that human relationships are complex and flawed, and his own life experiences.

I wasn't sure what to make of Insight when I first started reading. Nate Black is obviously confused about his gift and he's basically estranged from his family so finding information from them is pointless.

The author makes more than one reference through Nate's remarks that his family—the entire Black clan—is a bunch of loony people. His uncle, who probably was the closest family member, is a drunk and far removed from the conflict...or so it seems. It takes the biggest part of the book to get the full picture of the evil that lurks within the walls of the Black family.

When Nate receives a vision from his deceased twin confirming that his death was not suicide, Nate is compelled to embark on a journey that will give him answers to his brother's death.

Hitching a ride to New York with Trent is another sign that Nate can't ignore. Even though Trent is sarcastic, cocky, and extremely sexy, Nate feels comfortable and at peace with him—something he hasn't felt around another person in... maybe forever.

As Trent and Nate travel cross-country they share bits and pieces of themselves, their family, and Nate opens himself in a way that he never has before, trusting his secret with Trent. What he finds is someone who believes in him and is willing to go with him—no matter the danger—in order to find the answers Nate seeks.

The answers they find, however, are not what they expected and the people are not—at all—who they thought they would find. As Nate immerses himself inside the "Community" looking for answers and hidden truths he finds out there are people with far more powerful gifts than his own. What was his brother involved in? Are they all guilty and hiding secrets or can anyone inside be trusted?

Insight is a mystery with an underlying suspense always creeping around the edges. Dark, gritty and intense play a very big factor. There are several twists and turns keeping the reader on a precipice just waiting for something evil to destroy everything or everyone.  The author writes a compelling story keeping you—the reader—hanging on every word...kinda like Nate has the ability to do.

Trent and Nate's relationship is the catalyst that keeps Nate going. Nate's never had anyone to believe in him before Trent. They have amazing sexual chemistry and the sex is mind-blowing but Nate is a worrier, constantly questioning Trent's intentions. Thank goodness Trent has no problem putting his foot down, or better yet—laying Nate down—and showing him the error in his misguided thinking.

Insight ends with Nate and Trent in a good place and trying to move their relationship forward ...together. However, everything has not been settled after Nate left the Community in disarray and there are still more answers and unsolved questions lingering. Missing people even. Oversight, book two, is scheduled to come out in June. I'm looking forward and even anxious to see where the series is going.
