#NewRelease — Break Free (A Glen Springs Novel) Alison Hendricks — Available on Kindle Unlimited
A Glen Springs Novel #3
Release Date: December 26, 2017
When life serves up the worst, just put on your best face and greet the day with a smile. That's the philosophy that's made my mom the strongest person I know, and it's one I've tried to live by, too. With a great job running a very successful diner, it seems like the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree.
Only... my face is always just an act. Years ago, I let a man I loved control my life and make me feel like I was nothing. I got away--just barely. But now he's back, and I don't know if I have the strength to make it through.
I never wanted to rely on anyone else, but I may just have to depend on my favorite customer--a gruff security guard with a protective streak--to feel safe again.
I'm a f*cking failure. Couldn't hack it as a cop, so now I'm stuck with the laminated badge of hospital security. I go through the motions every day, with only one bright spot in my life: Eric, the owner of the local diner. We talk, we flirt, I imagine him on his knees...
And then I go home alone and try not to think about how empty my life is.
I've never let anyone get close to me, but Eric's busting down all my best defenses. When his assh*le ex comes back into his life, it triggers that hyper-protective instinct I thought I'd buried.
I'm not going to make the mistakes of my past.
And I'm not going to let anyone hurt Eric ever again.

I was excited to get Eric's story because he was such a vibrant and carefree character in the previous book. Once we meet him, however, we learn most of that is a window-covering. He's hiding a lot of hurt and fear underneath his facade and he's also hiding from those around him that love him most.
Eric was raised by one of the strongest women he knows and he never wants to let her down so when his mother's health starts declining he picks himself up and heads home to help her. He, also, sees this as a way to make a break from his own decline. Living with an abusive boyfriend has him clinging on the edge of despair and danger.
Reeve is a big, broody ex-cop—now hospital security guard—with a past he shares with no one. He comes into Eric's diner every morning to have breakfast after his shift and they flirt, but they don't talk to each other past their morning hello's, or what's on the day's menu.
Reeve has a lot of baggage he still carries from being a cop, a case still being investigated that's getting ready for trial that weighs heavily on him and causes nightmares. It also seems to be the main reason he's no longer a cop, but I was always confused as to why that was. The author gives bits and pieces but really never gives the full story.
When Eric's past comes crashing, literally, back into his life and Reeve sees the damage, not only at the diner but the devastation to Eric, he pushes for the truth. He, in turn, must open himself to Eric with his own past and together they work to keep Eric safe and see that justice prevails.
Break Free was an okay read but it was not my favorite Alison Hendricks story, by far. There were too many plot elements left out or glossed over and Eric and Reeve went from barely talking or knowing each other to IN LOVE and I didn't feel their chemistry or connection, at all, ON THAT LEVEL.
Reeve's background bothered me because it was relevant enough to cause him nightmares but then I felt like it was forgotten by the end. Eric's ex-boyfriend was another issue that was neatly cleaned up and put away. I really love this author's writing, but—for me—Break Free needed more depth and development.
