#Review #Spotlight • The Innocent Auction (Innocent #1) by Victoria Sue + Giveaway

London 1810.

Their love was a death sentence.

Deacon, Viscount Carlisle, was aware of the slums and gin-lanes of London. Just as he was aware of the underground traffic that furnished the brothels and bath houses with human innocents. He was also aware that the so-called justice system would hang the accused without much of an attempt at a defense, unless the unfortunate had deep pockets to pay for it.

He just hadn’t expected to be directly involved in any of it.

It started with a plea for help and ended with forbidden love, the love between a Viscount and a stable-boy. An impossible love and a guarantee of the hangman's noose.

Will Deacon fight for Tom? Will he risk the death sentence and take that fight from the stately halls of his English mansion to the horrors of Newgate Prison and the slums of London?

Or will he realize that if he doesn't, death will be a welcome end to the loneliness of the sentence he is already living?

I love historical books if they are done right and in my opinion Victoria Sue nailed it. The Innocent Auction takes the reader to the back alley streets in London where the clientele is dirty, usually drunk, and always has a hand out for money and are willing to do about anything if you have enough coin to hand over.

Deacon, a Viscount, always seems to be getting his cousin Beau out of trouble and this particular night he finds himself at the slave auctions looking for him. Before they make their getaway, Deacon sees a young blonde haired boy, named Tom, being auctioned and he can't stand to think what may happen and he buys him without thinking. His only thought was to save him but here is a young teen who is scared, a bag of bones, and freezing so Deacon sends him to his father's estate to work.

Fast forward almost five years and Deacon gets word of his father's passing. So many things need to happen and going back home will be the first time in several years that Deacon has stepped foot on his father's property.

From one revelation to the next Deacon is faced with decisions that he's not sure what to do. Finding his father's land and estate in total disrepair has him lost for words but the most alarming is the now grown, very filled out, and very beautiful, blue eyed, blonde Tom that still works there.

I love the setting the author created and even though the laws are very strict and they are in constant danger of getting caught Deacon and Tom are pulled toward each other. Deacon has never admitted to another soul his inclinations nor has Tom but they need each other desperately and with so many responsibilities on Deacon's shoulders, Tom does everything he can to ease his comfort.

I'm leaving a lot out but I highly recommend reading this story. There are many things going on, details left out, but I will say that Victoria Sue had be bawling at one point. This is an emotional journey, there are some heartbreaking moments, there are some very sexy and hot moments too, but put it all together and you have one hell of a good story.

There are many twists and turns throughout  and the intensity is high.  My nerves were pretty well shot by the end of the story because I wasn't sure how it was going to play out. The author kept me in suspense until almost the end and speaking of the end, Wow, what an ending. Amazing story. 5 Stars.
