Author: Nicola Haken
Genre: M/M Contemporary Romance
Release Date: February 29, 2016
When Theodore Davenport decides to switch his mundane job for a career, he walks into Holden House Publishing with enthusiasm and determination to succeed. As he settles into his new role, makes new friends, and dreams of making it to the top, everything is going to plan. Until he meets James Holden, CEO of Holden House. James Holden hasn’t been able to stop thinking about his encounter with the timid man he met in a club bathroom last week, and when he discovers the one haunting his dreams is an employee, he can’t seem to stop himself from pursuing him. Just a little fun - that’s what James tells himself. He can’t afford to care for someone who can never reciprocate, not once they find out who he really is. James believes nobody deserves the burden of being attached to him. He’s a complicated man. Damaged. Difficult. Demanding. Broken. Is Theodore strong enough to confront James’ demons? More importantly, is James? (M/M romance. Not suitable for readers under 18 years of age due to language and sexual content. ***Please note*** This book contains scenes of self harm, mental illness and suicidal ideation which may pose as a trigger, or be uncomfortable for some readers.)
“Broken is truly a remarkable book. I was blown away by it, by the raw and sincere way Ms. Haken took these men through the roller coaster of living with unrelenting demons. And now, as I sit here wondering if I have to courage to post this review, all I can think about is how far into my heart Theo and James have embedded themselves--and how I hope they never leave. I think it might be too hard to say goodbye...although maybe not as hard as it was find the words that I hope compel you to read this breathtaking book.” ~ Beth, Give Me Books
“A stunning but achingly painful read” ~ Author Sloane Kennedy
“This is an amazing book full of so much raw emotion that it gripped me and wouldn't let up. I felt like I was watching a movie in my head and I wanted to just jump in the book and give James a huge hug. Lots of FEELz in this book.. both good and bad.” ~ Alpha Book Club

Fan-Made Book Trailer

To every person walking by, James Holden is the epitome of success. He’s gorgeous, classy, smart, and rich. He demands attention and respect and he gets it or else. To Theodore Davenport, he was a one-night stand that was a mistake, a drunken moment of weakness that would never happen again. Even though his thoughts never waiver too far from James and what he felt like for those few moments in the bathroom during Friday night, he knows it’s not something that will have a repeat.

Monday morning rolls around too soon, but Theo is excited to get started at his new job. Until he walks into the boss’s office and Mr. Friday Night is staring back at him with enough arrogance to choke a horse. In order to cover for his discomfort and nerves Theo becomes sarcastic and rude, but what he doesn’t realize, at the time, his sarcasm only adds fuel to the fire he’s already stoked in James. It turns him on and it’s hot as hell.

Theo wants to say no to James, hate his guts, get him out of his mind, but he can’t. He’s attracted to him, fascinated by him, and for reasons he doesn’t understand, he feels a connection with him despite his arrogance and haughty demeanor.

James is cryptic and confusing but that only makes Theo want to figure him out that much more. Through a bad set of circumstances Theo manages to be at the right place at the right time when James needs help. Refusing to leave his side, or listen to the voices in his head telling him how stupid he is, he stays with James.

The way my name sounds on his tongue resonates through my entire body. I can’t even begin to understand why but he has complete control over me and, I don’t only allow it, I fucking love it.
— Theo

James has a reputation around the office and Theo swears he will not be another notch on his bedpost, but Theo is an infatuation that James wants to pursue. Against his better judgement and Tess, Theo’s best friend, Theo wants to date James. And, James is more than willing to give it a try. Banning sex till they get to know each other, James and Theo put their chemistry that is boiling over on simmer and have fun.

Will their fun take a nose dive before they even get started? James has battled a mental illness for a long time and it’s something that he’s not comfortable talking about or sharing with anyone else. When he fears that Theo may decide to walk away he forces himself to show Theo every part of him, inside and out. The good and the bad. For better or worse.

Nicola Haken has written a powerful and emotional story that will have your gut clinching and tears pouring down your face. She doesn’t sugarcoat the issues or sweep them under the rug to make it a nice and sweet story. James has struggled for many years and he’s done it alone for the most part. He doesn’t feel worthy of anyone or deserving of love and especially from Theo. It’s almost as if the concept of being loved is too much to fathom for James. It has never been a possibility until now and he has trouble wrapping his mind around this emotion.

Broken has so many amazing elements that it’s impossible to put down in a few words how touching and moving it is. Trust when I say you will be hard pressed to walk away until the end. If you’re like me, you will pick it right back up and start again to absorb the magnitude of what happened.

I have a family member who has been diagnosed with the same illness and I see his struggle, I see his highs and lows and his constant doubt and fear. One day he’s happy and resilient and ready to conquer the world and the next day he is disillusioned and has retreated within looking for an escape. The author touches on all of these issues and gives the reader a visual of what it’s like for the person who is living it daily. And it’s gut-wrenching but it’s also very powerful because we also get to witness it from the loved one’s view that stands on the outside looking in.

Absolutely, breathtakingly, beautiful story of love and perseverance and standing by your man. Highly recommended read to every person regardless of genre.  5 stars from me since that’s all I can give. Brilliant work from this author. Grab your copy TODAY, if you haven’t already.
