Former Navy SEAL Axel Blaze lives a solitary life. He doesn't do emotions, and he doesn't do babysitting. Used to being on his own, his job consists of Wetwork (a charming term coined by the KGB) for his former Master Chief, Mac. When an out-of-the-ordinary job lands on his doorstep, Axel heads down a path that includes a famous heavy metal rock band and one quiet, vulnerable, guitar-shredding virtuoso named Gareth Wolf.
Gareth Wolf's life changed in an instant when a car he was a passenger in crashed, hurting his brother's best friend and the band's lead guitarist. They created the band, Skull Blasters, as kids. Gareth had always been happy in the background, playing roadie. With the lead guitarist's injury, Gareth is suddenly thrust into the limelight and into a frenzied life he never imagined for himself. Finally fed up with living a lie, Gareth comes out as gay in a newspaper interview and finds himself in the bulls-eye of a crazed stalker. Somebody wants Gareth hurt - or worse - and Mac has been hired to be sure that doesn't happen. Babysitting duty is NOT Axel's strong suit, but Mac won't be budged.
Enter Axel Blaze. Against his better judgment, the big man takes the job to protect the shy musician. The more time he spends with Gareth Wolf, the more he admires the man. Where's a simple assassination when you need one? The situation becomes more volatile for each man as the attempts on Gareth escalate just as Axel finds himself falling for the quiet lead guitarist.
Strong, funny, smart-ass -- and kinda sweet Axel is everything Gareth has ever wanted in a man. Too bad he's off limits. As the stalker grows bolder, Gareth and Axel move closer emotionally - but is it too late? All Axel knows is that they don't stand a chance if he can't find the maniac trying to kill the man he's come to care about. A lot.
Everyone knows that relationships that begin in pressured or volatile situations eventually fizzle out. Or do they?
I am going to love this new series by Sandrine Gasq-Dion if Fret is anything to go by. The author does a great job of summarizing the story in the blurb. My favorite reads are the alpha/dominating male characters that are a teddy bear underneath their façade. I love the gruff and rough exterior and Axel Blaze has it in spades.
Meeting Gareth Wolf and seeing the real man behind the rock star exterior has Axel taking a different approach. He went into the job, against his better judgment, thinking Gareth would be whiny and annoying. He thought he would be using his fame and fortune in an attempt to show he was better than others. That is not who Gareth is, but the real Gareth is doing funny things to the hardcore, cold-hearted, ex seal and he’s not liking it.
Someone is trying to kill Gareth, or at least hurt him, badly. Gareth never had intentions of being in the band, The Skullblasters, which his brother and friends made up as teenagers. Being the little brother and always tagging along allowed him to be where he wanted to be…by his brother.
When an accident happens and Gareth gets pulled onto stage to fill in, his life gets turned upside down. He doesn’t want to hide who he is as a person, yet telling their fans he is gay, scares the crap out of him. But, just like always his brother stands by him and his decision, along with the rest of the band, because first and foremost, they are family.
Then…the threats start. That is when Axel comes into the picture and the book picks up speed. I love the banter between Axel and Gareth and the chemistry that is brewing under the surface. Gareth is snarky, but not unpleasant. He loves to tease Axel about his size but inside he is fantasizing about his body and being under that weight.
Axel was hired to follow Gareth everywhere but it’s no hardship for him to do so. He doesn’t know if they can have a relationship or if he even wants one since he has never opened himself up to those kinds of feelings. He does know that Gareth is nothing like he thought and he admires him for his beliefs and the way he handles himself.
Against their own reservations they succumb to the fire that has been burning in both of them and it was hot. They have incredible chemistry and they thrive off of each other. Axel realizes he may be in over his head, and he makes the decision to pull back.
This is a fast-paced story and I thought the author kept it moving with lots of action and/or drama. Through the entire story there is tension hanging that kept you wondering who the killer or stalker may be. I didn’t really know who it was until the very end and then until the actual moment I still wasn’t completely sure. Once the stalker is known it does seem to wrap up quickly, but the tension was palpable up to that point.
Even though Axel and Gareth have a strong connection and very hot chemistry, the author didn’t have them jumping in with both feet, which I appreciate. Axel takes some time away from Gareth so he knows for sure where his heart lies. Will it be with Gareth or does he like his self-imposed isolation too much?
I highly recommend this story and can’t wait to see what happens next. For me, Fret has everything I love in a story. The alpha badass with a high level of sexiness, humor, action, suspense, and of course, hot sex that will leave you smoldering. Ex-Navy Seal vs rocker? Sign me up and fast.
