If you are looking for a story that is sweet with little to no angst, The Marine in Unit A, by Kris Cook, would be a great place to start. This is a story about a group of people who live in the same building and are like family to each other. They have just lost their patriarch, Malcolm, who was like a father to twenty one year old Oliver.
Oliver was thrown out like trash from his own family at a very young age. Living on the streets was where Malcolm found him but offered him something he couldn’t refuse… a home.
Now, six years later, they are standing in front of Mockingbird Place saying goodbye to their dear friend. Oliver is furious when the new renter makes so much noise that it pulls them away from their ceremony. He storms over to give him a piece of his mind, but becomes enthralled by this marine named Adam.
I like the premise of the storyline the author lays out, however, it came across as unbelievable. It wasn’t realistic to me because everything happened too fast. Oliver only knows Adam a very short time, a day maybe, and he is already so infatuated by Adam he can’t think of anything else, but him.
Adam is in the closet but he comes across as a very angry, temperamental man. One minute he is falling quickly over Oliver, the next minute he is yelling and marching off in a rage. Yet, Oliver overlooks all of this, because he knows Adam is the one. Adam jumps to the wrong conclusion, constantly, flying off in a tantrum, only to forgive and forget, just as quickly as it took him to be mad.
The story is sweet, for the most part, and there is a great group of people that make up the cast. It is low-key with angst, but there is a great deal of action and drama. If you want a fast-paced, love wins all, low angst storyline you may enjoy this book. For me, it was over the top with too much sweetness.
