J. Johanis writes dark M/M fantasy and enjoys writing plots that are historical or myth-based.

Aside from writing, my biggest passion is studying foreign languages, learning new cultures and traveling. I’m fluent in three languages and have traveled extensively throughout Europe and the Middle East, as well as taking small excursions into Africa. However, since I started writing, I’ve immersed myself in reading m/m, and have placed my travel and exploration plans on the back burner.

When I wasn’t’ studying languages, I was studying history and mythology. In addition to my love for the ancient world, I’m also quite fond of the Middle Ages. I used to participate in the SCA as a sword fighter, but I also have a lot of interest in certain medieval craftsmen guilds. My specialty is sewing and designing dresses. Next to my computer, I have an ancient sewing machine. Well, not exactly ancient, but close to it, which means it’s an awesome machine. Whenever I’m procrastinating with my writing, I listen to books on my Kindle while sewing costumes.

Another Medieval guild that I love is making chainmail. I’m currently working on a large chainmail cape made up of 5 millimeter jump rings. I have to use pliers in order to handle the small rings, but it is well worth the effort since the finished product is mail so fine that it moves like fabric. I learned how to make chainmail on Youtube, so I’m quite proud of my progress. If you are wondering how this relates to my writing, I made a prototype chainmail dress that Siren wears in my first novel. I made it in order to see how the dress would move and flow. Overall, my hobbies and passions all intertwine and end up being weaved into my writing in one way or another.

This is my first novel by J. Johanis and the story did not disappoint. The author has listed an advisory, and I would recommend you take that into consideration before starting if you have triggers. There is abuse, rough sex, rape, and bondage. However, I didn’t find the scenes as hard-core as I thought they were going to be. But, that’s just me.

Marduk is a virgin god starting his college years at the temple. He has been there many times with his parents, but this is the first time he will be on his own. Luckily, he has two close friends, Shala and Nanya, who he stays close to while navigating his way.

Marduk has bedded women, but he has never been with a man. He has always been attracted to Shamash, one of the council gods, but felt sure he way out of his reach. Another god, Aya, also catches his attention, but he is not comfortable making a move.

One night, Shala and Nanya, blindfold and tie up Marduk. This is something they have done many times in the past so Marduk isn’t too concerned. This time is different because the goddesses have a surprise. Someone is taking Marduk’s viginity and since he can’t see or touch he has no idea who it is.

Shamash, I never agreed to this...I’m a god; I won’ can’t do this! Shamash...please don’t do this.
— Marduk

Sitting in class has Marduk watching everyone wondering if they were his seducer. During one of his classes he is paired with Aya. He has to kiss him and demonstrate to the class how it’s done. This isn’t exactly a hardship for Marduk since he has a crush on Aya, but their passion ignites and they get carried away in front of the class. Unfortunately, news of their kiss spreads throughout the temple and Marduk finds out, too late, that Aya belongs to Seth, a powerful god and one of his teachers.

From here, the author takes us on a very powerful and sometimes troublesome journey. Marduk is given to the council to use him however they see fit. He is passed from one to the other over and over, taken aggressively and without care. It doesn’t take him long to figure out that Aya betrayed him. Even worse, Shamash, the god he worshipped in private, is the head of this secret council. He is sinking into depression, and with no one to trust… he feels defeated.

While the gods and goddesses are in the temple they have no powers. Trying to fight against the brutality and rough sex is taking a toll on Marduk. He does have quick healing abilities being a god but that doesn’t matter when he is being abused repeatedly. How can Marduk get out of this mess he finds himself in? Is there anyone he can trust or has he been duped by everyone?

When a new god accompanies his father to the temple Marduk starts forming a plan. He knows this young man is a virgin and bringing him to the secret council is the only way to free himself from the torture and abuse. But, has he sunk so low that he would do to someone else what was done to him?

As the two young men spend more time together Marduk finds himself falling in love with the virgin god, Akad. He knows he could never give Akad over to the powerful gods but once word gets around of his virginity will he have a choice? There is only one way to protect him from the same fate. He will have to take Akad’s virginity instead. When everything backfires Marduk finds himself in more despair than he could have ever imagined.

I trusted you, and you betrayed me the first chance you had. Do us both a favor and stay the fuck away from me!
— Akad

Claimed by the Order is an intense and complicated story. The author takes us through many twists and turns and while some of it is hard to read you continue on hoping for someone or something to step in and save Marduk. There are many secondary characters that make this story come to life. Some, you hate immediately and others you want more of.

The angst is heavy throughout most of the story, and there were many times I wasn’t sure either who could be trusted. Of course, that adds to the level of intensity causing a few breath holding moments. As the truth starts to unfold and you can start to breathe easier, the author throws in curve ball that you weren’t expecting.

Overall, I really enjoyed the story and even though there were some cringing moments, they were necessary for the storyline. The execution flows smoothly and once you understand the dynamics of the temple, the gods and goddesses, it becomes fast-paced with lots of action and drama. I look forward to the next book in the series which the author gives us an insight and it looks just as intense if not more.

If you love fantasy, slaves, and can handle the abuse, I would definitely recommend this series and this author. 4Hearts
