My Review...

Mystery, suspense, comedy, and romance, are just a few of the delights you will get when you read Drama Queen, by Joe Cosentino. This is a fast paced story, about murder, that will wrap you up in the daily activities of college kids, their professors, and staff. A who-done-it mystery that will keep you guessing until the very end. And, it seems that almost everyone is a suspect.
Nicky Abbondanza is a college theater professor who has his eyes on Noah Oliver, an assistant professor in his department. Every time he sees Noah he is talking to someone else so he “assumes” he is in a relationship already. Once they get their stories straight and confess their feelings they make haste in making up for lost time.
Not only are they compatible in the bedroom, but they make a good detective team, as well. Why do they need to be detectives? People are being murdered, one after the other, and right under their noses, in the theatrics department.
The police are not getting anywhere finding the culprit so Nicky and Noah are asked to put their theatrics background to use and figure out who is killing off their co-workers and friends. There is a pretty big cast of characters and once they start digging into the background of some of them, more than one have motive to kill
.
Joe keeps the story fun and interesting as you, the reader, are also trying to figure out who the killer is. Right up until the very end, he keeps the suspense and mystery alive. Several times I thought I had it figured out only to be proven I had not. When the killer was exposed I admit he was not who I thought or even considered. And, I liked that a lot. I want a mystery that is a mystery. I don’t like knowing within the first few chapters who the bad guy is. Kinda takes away the fun of reading the story and Joe worked his magic giving you a suspenseful tale.
The story is told from Nicky’s point of view. I love how the author is always taking us inside the characters head giving us a deeper insight to his feelings. We get little snippets of his thoughts as the story unfolds and it will have you bursting with laughter many times. Joe is very clever with his storytelling, always throwing out innuendos that mean something else and it’s quite funny.
As Nicky and Noah get further into their own investigation they take on role-playing to get the answers they need. From impersonating a porn star to playing a reporter nothing is too much if it gets the answers they need. Considering they could be the next victim, they work diligently for clues.
Drama Queen is a fun, lighthearted, and enjoyable read. I have to say that it was really nice to sit down with a story that is mostly comedy with a dash of romance brewing on the side. Nicky and Noah share a few intimate moments that were carefree and romantic. I will be anxious to see what mischievousness they find themselves in next. And, I have no doubt that they will find themselves mixed up in something as the both like to be involved in the action around them. In the best way, of course.
Overall, I really enjoyed the story and I know I was either smiling or laughing through most of it. Joe has a very descriptive narrative that sets the scene perfectly. When you throw that together with the author’s sense of humor and a fast-paced dialogue, you end up with a very enlightening and gratifying story. A story that I would recommend to everyone who loves a good mystery with comedy and romance.
