I’ve put off writing this review for quite a while now, mainly because it’s very hard to write the strong feelings and emotions I go through as I read any book having to do with Jack L Pyke’s Don’t series. And, of course, Backlash, was no different.

I’ve always wondered about Gray and what makes him tick. Does he have the capacity to really love someone and show that in return? I think any lover of the Don’t series would agree with me that Gray doesn’t do romance. He’s not about candlelight dinners and/or walks on the beach. I think that may be more Jan’s speed, but with that said, I do believe Gray loves strongly. In Backlash, I believe he proves that love to Jack and even to Jan with his actions.

Backlash is told from Gray’s POV and OH MY GOD, I hurt for him so much. The toll that all of these events have taken on him, up to this point, is heart wrenching. From not eating to not sleeping, always ten steps ahead of everyone else, never trusting anyone, or very few, and the list goes on and on, and it is as equally hard on the heart as it is on Gray’s stomach.

I love that we, finally, get to see a bit more into who Gray really is and what he does. I think, to a certain point, we will never really truly know all of his secrets or what he does behind locked doors. And, I don’t think we need to in order to understand his motives. He has a very strong purpose and that is to keep Jack from harm.

Jack and Gray have a very special relationship. One that, for the most part, doesn’t even need words. They are so in tune with each other they just know what the other one is thinking. We see Jan brought into the fold a little more, more into their world of Dom/sub, but, for me, Jan is out of place there.

I like Jan and I think he has a very real role that he adds to the Jack/Gray dynamic. However, for me, I haven’t formed any attachments to him and there were a few moments in Backlash that I really had to step back and wonder about him and ask if he was to be trusted. I know, I know, I shouldn’t have gone there, but I did.

Even though Jan is not one of my most favorites I still worry about his health and sanity. My heart hurt for him, as well, with the pain and suffering he tries to keep to himself. Although he received counseling and such after the kidnapping, I see now the ramifications of that time have affected him much worse than I first thought.

And, that brings me to Jack. I love Jack and dare I say, I really love Martin. I get quite a thrill when Martin comes to play so I’m not sure what that says about me, but he makes me laugh and sometimes he even makes my mouth drop open with WTF moments. One thing is for sure, you are always on guard when Martin is in the room. I’m not sure he has a trustworthy bone in his body.

Bringing Martin back - against all advice not to - was a pivotal point move. Even he doesn’t know what information he holds but wow… Jack Pyke you continue to wow me with such intricately placed and planned plots that just have me sitting back shaking my head with astonishment and AWE.

I need to mention, as well, how much I believe Jack Harrison has improved over the course of this series. He still has a long way to go, no doubt, and he still has a lot of hang-ups and quirks. But the improvement that HE has made is phenomenal and I love how he tries to pass on some of that to Jan. Jack knows that he needs to handle Jan with kid gloves and he does it so effectively.

This entire series is absolutely mind boggling. The level of psychological torment that Jack takes the characters through and the twists and turns she weaves is unprecedented with anything I have ever read. I never had doubts that this series or this author could not or would not deliver and she has done so… in spades.

I went into reading Backlash at a slower pace, because I didn’t want it to end and when you read Jack Pyke books you know that you are getting ready to be schooled yourself so you better concentrate. So, I had mixed emotions when I found out that this was not going to be the last book.

First, YES another book. Second, GAH, I want closure for these guys. I want them to have their HEA, but then I got to thinking, you know… they love each other and they are safe and the dialog is more open than it’s ever been between them, so maybe all the secrets didn’t get spilled but they are happy and that works for me. For now.

A definite recommended must read that is imperative to read in order and deserving of way more than 5 stars.

Jack L. Pyke Bio:

Jack L. Pyke blames her dark writing influences on living close to one of England’s finest forests. Having grown up hearing a history of kidnappings, murders, strange sightings, and sexual exploits her neck of the woods is renowned for, Jack takes that into her writing, having also learned that human coping strategies for intense situations can sometimes make the best of people have disastrously bad moments. Redeeming those flaws is Jack’s drive, and if that drive just happens to lead to sexual tension between two or more guys, Jack’s the first to let nature take its course.
