I’ve been wanting to read Rent Me, by Brina Brady, for a while now so I finally just pushed everything to the side and went for it. At first, I was on the fence of how I felt about the story. I love BDSM stories, as long as, safe, sane, and consensual are priority. That wasn’t an issue here as they were very adamant about using safewords. I have mixed feelings with the dynamics of the master/sub world the author created.
Brennan was 12 years old when Dimitri took over his protection and guardianship. Finding him in his brother’s home being mistreated was not something Dimitri would or could condone. Brennan’s mom has passed away prior and he was left in the care of her boyfriend who abused him and treated him horribly.
Dimitri made it clear that until he turned 18 there would be no sexual relationship between them. Brennan loves Dimitri very much and he only wants his love to be reciprocated. Being raised in a Russian home and environment, Dimitri has obligations to fulfill to honor his family. One of those obligations being he must marry. Being gay with a lover is very much frowned upon by his Russian upbringing and heritage.
It’s really hard on Brennan to see his lover with a wife and being
As the story went on I found myself wanting to know more about these men. Some of the things that bugged me in the beginning soon went to the wayside as I was getting wrapped up in the storyline. I was really being pulled into the plot and pretty much didn’t move from reading the story until I reached the end. I had trouble connecting to the author's writing style in the beginning but it did get better as the story progressed.
The author has a lot of plot changes going on so you are constantly on edge wondering what is going to happen next. There are many twists and turns within the story and a lot of secrets that need to be revealed. As each secret is exposed the more you are pulled into the story. There were several times I really felt pulled to Brennan’s character. He was being treated unfairly and was pretty much a kept boy, but with a short leash.
Brennan practically begs for more adult responsibilities yet he acted too immature on more than one occasion, to handle them.Dimitri is pretty much at his beck and call but as Brennan would become jealous he would over react and create big scenes that pulled everyone in to settle the fallout. Most of the time it was due to his overactive imagination and not anything tangent of proof. He has a tendacy to be very childish most of the time especially when he doesn't get his way.
I did see character growth with Brennan as times goes on and he tries really hard to be someone Dimitri can be proud of. He has been kept in the dark about a lot of things so it’s no wonder that his mind creates problems that aren’t really there. Dimitri wants him for his lover and I believe that he really does love him very much. However, Dimitri treated him like a son instead of a lover on a lot of issues. I think if he would have treated him more like the adult that he is a lot of their troubles wouldn’t have blown up on everyone.
By the end of the story I was really emotionally involved and can’t wait to start on Book 2 to see where things go from here. Even with the few minor issues I had with the story I think Brina still done a really great job in setting up the plot and executing it to a happy for now stopping point.
My issues consisted mostly with the BDSM element and that it made me feel it was too rushed. For example, Dimitri would demand Brennan kneel into position and find his deep submission. This didn’t come across as believable for me as I felt Dimitri should guide him into his deep submission not expect Bren to find it on his own while he waited.
Another thing that I wasn’t keen on was Dimitri’s brother Mischa, who is as much of a guardian to Bren as Dimitri, was always pushing him into the direction of finding a woman to be with. He is straight and doesn’t really approve of Dimitri and Brennan’s arrangement. Brennan knows he is gay but for some reason wants to see if he can be with a female. Bringing her into the equation wasn’t something that I enjoyed but thankfully it ended about as fast as it started. Have we seen the last of her, though? I’m not sure as she may have more on her agenda.
At any rate, I thought the author showed the emotion very well between the characters. By the end of the story, I really liked both Dimitri and Brennan’s characters and really wanted them to find their happy ever after. And, for the most part, they do. The author reveals more secrets at the end which is also a very sweet and heartfelt moment between the MC’s. The ending is not necessarily a cliffhanger but it definitely leaves you wanting to move to the next story right away to see what happens. I plan on doing that very soon because I really need to see what happens next.
Overall, I really did enjoy the story and would recommend it to other readers who enjoy BDSM with some pleasure/pain dynamics and enough angst to keep you on the edge of your seat. The author shows her sense of humor as well and had quite a few funny, laugh out loud, moments that had you smiling from ear to ear. Own Me, is book 2, and I am anxious to see where the author takes us next.
