WOW, WOW, WOW, what a story. I don’t think I can express how much I enjoyed this book. A Hunted Man by Jaime Reese, is an incredible, thought-provoking, heart-pounding novel that will capture your soul. I think it is safe to say, that most of us, know pretty much from the first chapter, if something is going to capture your interest, pull you inside of the characters thoughts and feelings, basically hold you prisoner within the story. That is what happened with me, while reading, A Hunted Man. The author captivated me with her storytelling, and would not release me. This was a very long story, over 600 pages to be exact. It’s not often, these days, to find a book of this length. I, personally, love the longer books, especially, when I become so invested in what I’m reading, pretty much everything around me is blocked out. This is not a one afternoon read, however, you will be surprised at how fast it goes. Don’t let the page count hold you in fear about reading this. This is such an amazing story, you don’t want it to end.
I would like to note, before you read this story, you should read, if you haven’t already, the first book in this series, A Better Man. There is where we meet Julian and Matt, and the story behind The Halfway House. They, finally, have the house ready to take on their first guest. Cameron Pierce has just stepped foot in the Halfway House after 10 years in prison. He comes pretty much a broken man. He has been left to rot by his family, friends, and the judicial system. He doesn’t trust anyone, and no one, certainly, ever gave him reason to earn their trust. Everyone that he knows has failed him in some way. He just wants to get a job, finish out his rehab time here at the house, and maybe he can be a productive citizen, and live out the rest of his years, in peace. What actually happens, is what he has feared the most. His past will not let him drop his guard. More importantly, what about the guard he has around his heart? He has spent the last 10 years, building a wall, keeping himself inside and, everyone else, out. He has lived in constant survival mode. He is about to meet the biggest challenge he has ever been up against. His name is Hunter and he may be the best thing that has ever happened to him.
Hunter Donovan is a lawyer who wanted to make a difference for his town. He takes pride in cleaning up the streets and making it an, overall, better place to live. That is, until, he starts getting some deliveries to his office that he is unsure of their intent. To get away from the stress he likes to visit a diner down the street. Homemade, Chocolate Chip Cookies, cure everything, which was his main reason for visiting. Now, he has a new reason, in the name of Cameron who works the coffee machine. He makes it his mission to get to know who this mysterious stranger is, and why he is so drawn to him. Cameron brings out all of Hunter’s protective instincts and he will do anything to put a light back in his eyes. All of sudden, being alone, working non-stop, is no longer appealing. Having Cameron in his heart, home and bed are now his priorities. Cameron, as we know, has been in prison for 10 years, so his sexual experience is very limited. He was only 17 when he was arrested. He, nor Hunter, let that deter them from experiencing the pleasure they can give each other. To say, there were fireworks between the two, would not describe their passion and drive and raw hunger they have built up. When they come together, they are hungry and almost desperate for each other. As Cameron and Hunter are enjoying each other’s company, getting closer to each other, outside forces are, very much, at work trying to destroy their new found happiness. They have much more in common than they could ever imagine. When things start making more sense, Will Hunter continue to protect Cameron, or will he abandon him like everyone else? Cameron has reason to be concerned, he just isn’t sure if it is a justified concern. When the chips fall, and they will fall, who will be left standing?
This is an intense read, at times. There were other times that I was actually laughing out loud, smiling from ear to ear. Jaime Reese has proven, without a doubt, that she is an awesome storyteller. This story only proves that she has developed and honed her craft to near perfection. The only reason I say near is because I don’t think anything or anyone is 100% perfect. We all have room for improvement, that’s just being human. A Hunted Man, has everything you could want in a story. There is mystery, intrigue, suspense, laughter, humor, love, the art of giving as well as receiving, and on and on. The author will take you on some twists and turns that honestly, I was completely enthralled by. The details that she weaves in this story are incredible. So many times I laughed from pure joy and exhilaration. There were, also times, I had tears pouring down my face, and my nose became stopped up. Thankfully no one was around for me to explain why these fictional characters were ripping my heart out. The background characters were just as incredible as the main, where each played an important role in the telling of this outstanding story. They were not fluff to fill in space, they had a role, and they fulfilled it, beautifully. From Chapter 1, 600 pages no longer entered my mind. I kept thinking, OH, I hope we are not close to the end yet. I was completely invested. She had me hook, line, and sinker. I cannot encourage you enough to read this series. Jaime Reese……stand up girl, take a bow, you deserve it. Amazing!!!!!
